India takes on Tajikistan in the 2019 Intercontinental Cup at the TransStadia Arena in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on Sunday. The first game of the third edition of the tournament will see Igor Stimac’s Blue Tigers take on a fresh crop of Persian Lions.

Match Preview

Both teams arrive at the competition in similar fortunes and a change in the coaching staff. The hosts will be playing their third game under Igor Stimac after Stephen Constantine resigned following a poor show in the AFC Asian Cup.

At the same time, Tajikistan will be hoping for a strong start to the Usmon Toshev era which is just two games old. The Lions are winless in six games and were absent at the Asian Cup, failing to make it past the qualifiers.

Thailand Stimac era began with mixed bags for India after a third-place finish in the King's Cup last month. While the frailties at the back were obvious, the free-flow football showed some promise.
Tajikistan can’t be considered favourites, due to the fact that they are undergoing a major transition and are yet to find the winning competition. But a young, hungry batch of players could play spoilsport and prove to be the dark horses of the tournament.

The last time the two teams met, Tajikistan ran away as 3-0 winners in a friendly at home in 2013. The Persian Lions were on the right end of three points a year before that when Kathmandu hosted the two sides in an AFC Challenge Cup tie. India’s last win over Tajikistan dates back to more than a decade ago when they won 4-1 in the 2008 edition of the same competition.

All eyes will be on new entrant Jobby Justin who made the squad for the first time. This game will also mark the return of Anas Edathodika to the squad after the defender announced his retirement following India’s Asian Cup exit.
